Proteins
Predominantly insectivorous. High need for liquid carbohydrates. In small colonies (<50 workers) use only fruit flies as protein.
May – July
Warm nights (>20°C) after rain or storm. Nocturnal or dusk flight. Attracted to artificial light.
Iberian endemic species. Queens are very large and striking (12–15 mm, red and black). If you see a large queen with red-black wings in May or June, it is likely Camponotus cruentatus.
This species produces soldiers (majors) with differentiated morphology.
Extremely slow growth in the first year. A colony of 10 workers is normal after 6 months. Do not despair.
