In nature it lives on honeydew from subterranean aphids. In captivity it accepts diluted sugar, but is difficult to maintain well.

Warm afternoons (20–26°C) on humid days. Evening flight. Alates emerge from the ground.
Flight is barely visible as alates emerge directly from the ground. Queens are bright yellow and can be spotted in grass after the flight.
Nearly invisible in the formicarium: lives underground. Requires a formicarium with deep, dark substrate.
