Nuptial flight

July – August

Warm afternoons (22–28°C) after a period of rain. Usually occur in the afternoon between 16:00 and 20:00. Massive, synchronized flight with neighboring colonies.

One of the most spectacular nuptial flights in Europe. All colonies in an area fly on the same day. Queens shed their wings upon landing and search for a founding site.

Do not feed during hibernation. Very sensitive to vibrations near the nest.
